The Horrors of Bermuda Ownership

I was strolling around my backyard with my son today, throwing a ball to my dog, when the utter horror struck me - my Bermuda is greening up. On February 9th. And I’m completely unprepared.

Three days ago, I noticed some green sprouts in my Bermuda lawn, but it was sporadic and not enough for Spring scalp (I want to see green haze across the whole lawn before doing Spring scalping). The weather forecast called for a rain event this weekend, and some cooler temperatures the week afterwards; longer term forecasts called for March 17th when we consistently get into the 70s. Soil temperatures were in the 50s but were coming down. I had plenty of time - maybe do a leisurely pre-scalp, put down some PGF Balanced after the rain event, start pre-emergent split application.

And then I took that shocking stroll with my son. First 10 steps convinced me I’m already behind the curve and shit has already hit the fan - my Bermuda is waking up, soil temperature is 59F, I have 16 hours until the rain event, and I have to babysit my son as he started to run a fever yesterday.

Bermuda greening up
Great to see Bermuda greening up, but this is February 9th...

Have to work with what I have - the kid is going to bed early today, the dog is getting walked at 6am tomorrow, and the spreader is getting fired up at first twilight (6:53am, to great joy of my neighbors I’m sure) so that I at least put in PGF Balanced before the rain tomorrow morning. I will scalp probably on Tuesday, or as soon as the soil dries up a bit. At least the rain this weekend will give me some time to adjust all the customers' schedules, as I no longer believe we should wait for March for 10-10-10 and pre-emergent applications.

Ah, the horrors of Bermuda ownership. Totally worth it.
